BELLAIRE, Ohio – On Tuesday, Senator Lou Gentile received the endorsement of the United Mine Workers of America in the race for Ohio’s 30th State Senate District. Mike Caputo, Vice President of United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) District 31, made the endorsement.
“Make no mistake, Lou Gentile is a true friend to Ohio’s coal miners. He has worked tirelessly to keep our pensions, our healthcare, and our jobs. Any attacks against his record are false. The United Mine Workers of America supports Lou Gentile.” – Mike Caputo
“Lou’s been a good friend of labor, a good friend of mineworkers, has stood up for working class people. It’s rare that you can find someone so sincere and passionate. I feel like I can really trust him.” – Dave Dilly, miner
“I joined this union in 1969, worked actively for 45 years, and I can honestly say that of all the politicians I have dealt with in the last 47 years, Lou Gentile is as honest as the day is long. He is in my top three favorites. When he says he’s going to do something, he’s going to do it. He cares about everybody. For him to be thrown out of the Senate, it would be a crime and a shame.” – Larry Vucelich, miner
In response to the endorsement, Senator Gentile commented:
“I am very humbled and honored to receive the endorsement of the United Mine Workers of America today. Fighting to make sure our coal miners and working families of Eastern Ohio have a voice in the Ohio Senate drives my work, and I am thankful for the support of the UMWA.”
Senator Gentile led the fight to keep the Mine Safety Training Center in Eastern Ohio, where a new facility is being built. Most recently, Senator Gentile sponsored a resolution calling on Congress to pass the Miners Protection Act to save the pensions and benefits of retired UMWA coal miners and families. The Act is supported by both Democrats and Republicans in Congress.
